It was a bit windier than usual in Southend when brass bands from across the country gathered to puff it out in a marathon competition.

More than 700 people made their way to the Cliffs Bandstand in Southend for the first brass band competition in the town since bands fought it out in the Kursaal 35 years ago.

Southend Council spokesman Mike Pressling said the day had gone very well.

He said: "It was a most successful and enjoyable day, featuring more than six hours of music. We had superb weather throughout the day, and it will now become a regular feature in our events calendar."

The day was organised by Southend Council, who got together with the Southend Brass Band to put on the event after an idea from council leader Graham Longley.

A number of trophies were up for grabs during the event.

The winners were:

The Southend United Challenge Trophy / Southend-on-Sea Band Contest Supreme Champions 1998 - Epsom and Ewell Silver Band.

The Challenge Trophy / Southend-on-Sea Band Contest Entertainment Champions 1998 - Epsom and Ewell Silver Band.

The Major Challenge Trophy / Southend-on-Sea Band Contest March Champions 1998 - Epping Forest Band.

The Kursaal Perpetual Trophy / Southend-on-Sea Band Contest Musicianship Award 1998 - The Southend Band.

The John Griffiths Challenge Trophy / Southend-on-Sea Band Contest Entertainment Runner Up 1998 - The Southend Band.

The Dawn Challenge Trophy / Southend-on-Sea Band Contest Merit Award 1998 - City of Cambridge Brass Band.

Members of all bands also raised £365 towards the Clarence Adoo Trust - a support fund for a talented trumpet player paralysed from the neck down.
